Although my life now is completely different from my childhood dreams, I couldn’t possibly be happier!

 

As a child growing up in China, my dream was to become a scientist, just like my idol Madame Marie Curie. With hard work and the support of my parents, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to come to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in Pharmacology.

 

However, in graduate school, I realized that my life’s passion wasn’t science, but rather in something that I’d always pursued as a hobby: fashion and design. I’d always designed and made clothes for myself and others, and it finally dawned on me that this was my true passion and that I would never be completely fulfilled as a scientist. So I left with an M.S.

 

In 1997, I entered Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco and majored in Fashion Design. I vowed to myself that I would someday own a business in the fashion industry.

 

In 2002, after working two years for other designers, I used up all my savings to open the store Shunzi in Petaluma. In 2005, I opened a second Shunzi on 4th Street, in the heart of San Rafael. The following year, my husband and I became the proud parents of a darling little boy. After our son’s second birthday, I opened a third Shunzi on Main St. in beautiful downtown Los Altos.

 

Although being a boutique owner in the beautiful Bay Area is something I never dreamed of growing up in China, I realize now that I’ve actually realized dreams that were deeper in me than even I knew at the time.
